COLOR YOUR MIND: BY MARIA SHRIVER

With over six million people living with Alzheimer’s

disease in the United States alone, Color Your Mind is written for caregivers, family, and friends to help forge communication and connection with people with Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia. 

Maria Shriver is a leading advocate for people with Alzheimer’s and their families. Her father, Sargent Shriver, was diagnosed with the disease in 2003 and passed away in 2011. Throughout his disease, Maria Shriver sought out activities she could do with her father to feel close to him. She authored Color Your Mind to help both people with Alzheimer’s and the people who love and care for them. Her hope is to help people with Alzheimer’s and caregivers find ways to connect with one another.

CREATING THE BOOK

Color Your Mind was created with insights from caregivers, neurologists, doctors, and, of course, people with Alzheimer’s. The activities, images, and approach in Color Your Mind were developed and refined through visits to nursing homes and memory care facilities. These visits and interactions also informed the selection of cheerful, inspiring coloring images in Color Your Mind.

SIX CHAPTERS FOCUSING ON WELLNESS AND BRAIN HEALTH

Focusing on the importance of maintaining a positive attitude, of practicing gratitude, of learning throughout one’s life, and of having a daily routine.

Suggestions for easy, accessible exercises including dancing, gardening, or taking a nature walk with your caregiver to help find what works the best for you.

Ideas for telling friends and loved ones how we feel about them, and suggestions for ways to spend quality time with others. Cherish the gift of friendship!

Music and art have the power to evoke strong emotional responses and trigger distant memories. Seeking the arts and opportunities for new adventure enriches daily life.

Healthy eating supports our well-being and nourishes both the body and the mind. It’s important that people with Alzheimer’s should consult with their doctor about which diet is right for them.

Sleeping suggestions that can help to prepare for a good night of sleep, including deep breathing and relaxation. It explores the importance of devoting time to “wind down” at the end of the day.
